Okiku and the 9 Plates

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 24, 2008, 1:00 AM
There are lots of different versions of the story but the one I like best is:

Okiku works as a maid in the house of wealthy and respected samurai called Aoyama. He becomes infatuated with the beautiful Okiku and attempts to persuade her to be his mistress, though she refuses him. Angry but determined, Aoyama gives Okiku ten priceless plates asking her to watch over them. Some time later he sneaks one of the plates away and requests that Okiku bring the plates to him for inspection. She counts them hundreds of times hoping for a mistake, but over and over she finds that one of the plates has come up missing. Beside herself, she begs Aoyama to forgive her, as the punishment for the loss of a family heirloom is death. According to his plan, he offers to pardon Okiku, so long as she becomes his mistress. When she refuses him still, Aoyama flies into a rage stabbing Okiku to death and disposing of her body down a well. From then on, the forlorn spirit of Okiku was heard every night, counting to 9 and then sobbing uncontrollably. Aoyama heard Okiku's nightly cries but was never able to stop her shrieking. It was slowly driving him insane. When he could bear the memories of his great cruelty no longer, Aoyama threw himself down the well ending his life. Though he attempted to repent for his evils, Okiku can still be heard at the bottom of her well counting to nine and screaming for the loss of the tenth plate. Okiku's well still exists, [link] , though there's probably no ghost in it :(

I went through about half a dozen books when I was trying to figure out what Athenais' hair color would have been- was it really a deep reddish brown? I was taken aback when Fraser declared that she was a blond, and showed the only two pics of her where she her hair is this flat, brassy dyed color. It made sense to me when another book said that she was, in fact, a brunette, but dyed it to capture the King's attention. It fits in with how incredibly artificial she was! ;P

How strange! I must've skipped right over that part. I know Louise had blonde hair but Athenais was certainly brunette (though I do like the idea of her dying it... it seems like something she would do :D)

Well, the Antonia Fraser book mentioned that Montespan had "corn-yellow" hair, which is certainly not true. (As far as I can tell, she had dark brown hair [possibly with reddish highlights, since it looks auburn in a few portraits]. One book I found said she dyed it once to catch the king's eye, which does sound like her.) I'll have to check out the others, though!

There was one called "The Real Queen of France" by Lisa Hilton that was very informative. "The Sun King" by Nancy Mitford has a little bit about each of them and "Love and Louis XIV" by Antonia Fraser is really great as well ^_^
